Text chosen by Hilal Bugali.
For this week’s reading group we’ll be looking at Victor and Sylvia Margolin’s “A ‘Social Model’ of Design: Issues of Practice and Research”.
The text discusses the social discourse in design profession, and shed some light on the polarisation between the “market model” and the “social model” of design practice.
This text is part of essential readings on social design literature. Although the responsibilities of designers to the society have been discussed since 1960’s, the ways to fulfil these have been seldom explored. Margolin and Margolin abstain from giving an explicit roadmap, but they help set a research agenda about this emerging direction in practice.
